Most of our guests are from out of Nicaragua, so like to help them find things to do around the San Juan del Sur. Sure, there are some great tour guides around that can give you an amazing day… But part of the fun of coming to Nicaragua is the sense of adventure, right?
- Playa Remanso – This is the closest beach to San Juan del Sur, and is great for a day or half-day outing. With 2 bar/restaurants to choose from (the one on the right has amazing lobster nachos), and a small surf shack where you can rent boards and get lessons, plus clear water and a spectacular view, this is the one we always recommend. So far, no one has come back disappointed!
- Ometepe – Easily reached for a day trip from San Juan del Sur, there are all kinds of things to do on Ometepe: hike a volcano, do a canopy tour/zip line, see monkeys, visit a waterfall, or my favorite, go to Ojo de Agua. If don’t want to take a nap in the many hammocks, you can swim in the refreshingly cool water, grab a delicious fresh smoothie, try to walk across the tight rope, or drop into the water from the rope swing. The food is great, too!
- Popoyo – An hour an a half north of San Juan del Sur, you’ll find Popoyo. If you’re into the water, this is a great place to spend a day! Whether you want to try your hand at surfing, take yoga or an aerial class, snorkle, paddleboard, fish offshore, or even spear fish, you can find it at Playa Popoyo. Plus you’ll drive through Rivas and Tola, go by Rancho Iguana (great if you like to golf) and Rancho Santana (you have to be staying there to enter, but it’s still lovely) and the new Costa Esmerelda airport, so the drive is interesting, too. Try Magnific Rock for stunning views over a cocktail or coffee.
There are other great adventures around – Playa Hermosa, where Survivor Nicaragua was filmed has a pristine beach. You can visit Da Flying Frog orParque de Aventura in San Juan del Sur for a canopy tour, eco hike, or horseback riding. A visit to Masaya or Catarina will fill your suitcase with great handmade crafts, and Laguna de Apoyo will cool you off in crystal clear volcanic waters.
Or you can just sit by the pool or lie in a hammock and do nothing…… Tranquilo. El Pacifico Hotel offers both, plus cold beer, Pacifico Punch, and a great atmosphere!
